It’s something more liberals need to understand. DSA may not be what they think it is.

### What does DSA say DSA is?

The Democrats are increasingly falling in love with DSA. According to a recent [CNN poll](https://www.cnn.com/2026/07/30/politics/cnn-poll-a-third-of-democrats-now-identify-as-democratic-socialists?ref=hollerings.org), about one-third of Democrats now identify as Democratic Socialists.

That made me wonder how many liberals actually know what the party stands for. To find out, I went to the [official DSA website](https://program.dsausa.org/?ref=hollerings.org).

At first all I was able to find was a generic graphic. This is what the DSA is *telling* people they fight for:

(This is not an ad or a meme. It's a screenshot directly from the DSA website.)

If you only read this generic list on the website and went no further, you might not get the full picture. On the surface these goals seem wholesome but I noticed nothing was directly mentioned about the DSA’s view on capitalism.

### So what about capitalism?

Not specifically addressing capitalism seemed odd given the recent attacks by Republicans claiming DSA is a communist movement.

Because one of the main tenets of communism is to abolish capitalism, I wanted to understand DSA’s position on that.

After digging around I came across the DSA’s Program page. What I found there opened my eyes.

These are their words, not mine:

(Also not an ad or meme. This is evidence.)

Observation: DSA says there should be no capitalism. [Communists say](https://www.britannica.com/topic/communism?ref=hollerings.org) there should be no capitalism.

Not a lot of difference there.

How about this next one? Is this really what liberals support?

(Another screenshot from the DSA website.)

Observation: DSA says most things should be provided by the government. [Communists say](https://www.britannica.com/topic/communism?ref=hollerings.org) most things should be provided by the government.

Again, not a lot of difference.

Finally, near the bottom of the Platform page I found this:

(Once again, this is not a meme but I wish it was.)

[![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/6a/aa/6aaaae4d-77d2-465a-953d-a42130e46c6b/content/images/2026/08/dsa03.png)](https://program.dsausa.org/?ref=hollerings.org)

No markets, no responsibility, everything provided. Is that really what liberals support? Well, apparently it’s what DSA supports.

Again, I’m not saying these things about DSA – DSA is saying these things about itself.

### Coming soon in another post

I think most people who identify as Democratic Socialists really support another type of socialism called social democracy. More on that in another post but in the meantime here’s a [quick rundown](https://goodparty.org/blog/article/social-democracy-vs-democratic-socialism?ref=hollerings.org) comparing the two systems.

Edited for clarity.
